Thoughts from the consumer about Genmar

Just read the article about Genmar getting back into the aluminum boat business. Seeing as how they used to own Lund,Crestliner, and Lowe,...it would be nice to see Genmar buy back at least one of them, mainly Lund. When Brunswick bought Lund, and the others from Genmar,I had a feeling that Brunswick would dictate what brand of motor you could or could not run. If Genmar would buy back Lund,we would all have a choice of what outboard we could run on OUR boat,...not Brunswick's boat. It would be nice to see an Evinrude E-TEC 225 H.O on the transom of a Lund 2025 Pro-V,or even a Yamaha V-Max 225 series 2 motor. Though I am a die-hard Lund guy,I have thought about dismissing the brand in favor of brands such as Stratos,Ranger(an older model that I could afford), or any other Genmar brand boat just to have a broader choice in outboards. But,...I can't see myself going to another brand of boat, really. Perhaps,if I bought an older Genmar made Lund,I would have that choice(Evinrude or Johnson on an older WC-16 or A-14)of what motor I want. Let's see Genmar buy these brands back and give us a choice in what outboard the customer wants,...NOT the motor the manufacturer wants him to have.

Deciding to stay with Mercury

It seems that everywhere you look,...especially in the northeastern part of Indiana lake regions,...you see alot of Mercury Marine dealers,...and very few,if any,...Evinrude/Johnson dealers. What does this tell you? It tells me that Mercury is the way to go for alot of reasons. Dealer availability, parts and service availability, and of course, sales. After considering the purchase of another Lund A-14 utility boat,I was looking at motors such as Yamaha,Johnson,Honda, and even Tohatsu for power. I have decided to forego those brands, and stick with Mercury for the reasons I have stated. I was told by a dealer yesterday,...no,Monday,..that Mercury has 45% control of Tohatsu and even then Mercury's motors from 2.5 to 30 HP are Tohatsu made anyway. Johnsons are very hard to come by now,and Evinrude's E-TEC is not down to the 15 HP range yet, anyway. So I have to count them out.

RE: What will happen with Johnson?

OOOOOOOOH! How does a consumer get on a site for the business only.Or think that what he thinks will make any diffrence to the rest of us. You know ,the customer is not always right. GOOD BYE!!!!!!! Wrong,Mr. Boso,...the customer is always right no matter what. It is the customer who signs your paycheck. It is I,the customer who will either make,or break, you. You treat a customer the way they should be treated and they will keep coming back,...but mistreat them once and the word will get out as to how bad your business tactics are,or can be. You sell me a good reliable product and I will refer other customers to you. Sell me junk, and I will tell them to go elsewhere. I said all that in the kindest way I could, but it is the truth. It happens in all types of businesses,be car dealer, motorcycle dealer, etc. Which means that come time to hope- fully buy another Lund boat,I will go nowhere else but to Tippecanoe Boat Co. in Leesburg,In. They treated me well in the past,so I will return. The only hitch is the he is not a "loose motor" dealer for Yamaha, and I insist on a Yamaha motor on the back of an A-14 Lund utility-v bottom row boat. I would have to get the motor somewhere else,or try and talk him into getting me the motor through him anyway. Gotta go for now,...back tomorrow.

RE: What will happen with Johnson?

I appreciate your allegiance to the Johnson brand name, and I too have been a Johnson fan for nearly 50 years. I am currently a BRP engine dealer, exclusively, and am very proud of the performance of the products we have to sell. I attended the dealer meeting in early May, and many of the dealers asked for some idea of when the E-Tec would be made in the lower horsepowers. The answer was "We are definitely working on it, and committed to making it happen, but not this year." They also said they valued the Johnson trademark, and that there were plans to continue it into the future, but we heard no specifics. I believe you'll get something to be proud of in the near future with Johnson. Anyone who has subscribed to this site for any period of time knows Mr. Boso's attitude and opinion (on just about everything). Don't let one sour grape get to you. Perthaps Mr. Boso's "good riddance" statement reflects his wishful thinking of not to having to compete with BRP in the marketplace. Mercury seems so nervous about their ability to compete that they routinely buy-up boat companies so they can "close" their transoms to other brand engines. Keep reading and posting, and we'll hope that somehow the consumer's opinion gets the value it deserves here. Thanks. I have been away from the site for quite awhile,...work,family,and other issues no allowing time to spend on the site as I would like. Anyway,to stress another point on the issue of Mercury being so very nervous about BRP's ability to compete that they buy up boat companies(Lund being one of them, and being a die-hard Lund guy,the only boat brand I will even consider)it is not fair to the consumer that they(Mercury)dictate what brand of motor you can run. Neither Brunswick or Mercury is going to dictate what brand of motor I put on the transom of a Lund A-14 utility boat, especially since it is not a package deal from the factory. Though I am mostly a Johnson fan,I am also going to consider a Yamaha F15 15 hp four stroke motor for that boat if I cannot get the Johnson for some reason. Anything but Mercury! If need be,I'll buy the boat and trailer from one dealer and the motor from another that carries the make of motor I want,be it Evinrude,Johnson,or even better yet,...Yamaha! You are hearing this from a consumer,so please keep that in mind if you respond. I'd be happy with any one of those three motors.
